Stations often had these Water Cranes at the ends of each platform so that locomotives could replenish their tanks during a journey without having to be uncoupled. The cranes were usually supplied by a large water tank. Our model is based on a Great Western prototype. Also included is a Fire Devil. This consists of a coke brazier and a long chimney flue to direct the hot exhuast gases onto the main cast iron pipe. This device would be kept lit in freezing temperratures to maintain water supplieds to the trains throughout the hard winter months.
